چکیده
Psychology has been running a successful " In-House Convention " for over 30 years and nicely summarise below why they do so: " Each year, usually in April, the Department runs a mini-convention. This event, called the 'In-House Convention', was initiated in 1975 more or less single-handedly by Graham Goddard, and since his untimely death has been dedicated in his honour. Presentations in the form of short talks or posters are strongly encouraged from all members of the Department, students and faculty alike. This meeting provides each of us with an opportunity to present our ideas to a bright, receptive and interdisciplinary audience. It also gives us a glimpse of what some of our colleagues are up to. The presentations can be theoretical, methodological, empirical or technical in nature, and need not necessarily report on a completed research project. Indeed, this meeting should be used as forum for the presentation of new ideas for research. " Our Annual Brunel Psychology Conference extends Goddard's original idea in two important ways: (a) Each year we will award a prize in honour of the late Brunel Psychologist Marie Jahoda 2 , for best student oral presentation; and (b) Provide a showcase of our work for the community of academic and non-academic users outside Brunel. Brunel University and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) are increasingly interested in how psychological research can inform the government and private sectors. Thus an important function of the Brunel Psychology Conference is to engage with the non-academic community and invite interested parties to attend sessions so that research collaborations and translational exchange of ideas may occur. The conference committee is particularly pleased by the broad range of topics represented at this conference (ranging from neurobiological to social processes). We have four Psychology PhD students competing for the Marie Jahoda Memorial Prize and their chosen topics also reflect the breadth of our department (e.g., fMRI and emotion perception, sequence learning, language production and perception, and cross-cultural aspects of the family). In 2009 the submission of special symposia for topics of broad interest will be encouraged in which several Brunel Psychologists can present theory, methods or findings and openly discuss the emerging themes in a round-table forum. Look forward to seeing you in 2009! I would like to thank attendees and of course the presenters for making this event such a wonderful success Sincerely, 1. Graham Goddard – a …

Sensory processing during viewing of cinematographic material: Computational modeling and functional neuroimaging
The investigation of brain activity using naturalistic, ecologically-valid stimuli is becoming an important challenge for neuroscience research. Several approaches have been proposed, primarily relying on data-driven methods (e.g. independent component analysis, ICA). However, data-driven methods often require some post-hoc interpretation of the imaging results to draw inferences about the unde...
متن کاملCortical cross-modal plasticity following deafness measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy
Evidence from functional neuroimaging studies suggests that the auditory cortex can become more responsive to visual and somatosensory stimulation following deafness, and that this occurs predominately in the right hemisphere. Extensive cross-modal plasticity in prospective cochlear implant recipients is correlated with poor speech outcomes following implantation, highlighting the potential imp...

Background: Reading is one of the highlighted skills in learning. Hearing impairment can be lead to reading disorder in children with hearing impairment. The aim of occupational therapy is education, cognition, evaluation and as well as removing barriers to learning. Method: This is a case study about a student with hearing impairment and reading disorder. Primary evaluations performe...
متن کاملTonotopic mapping of human auditory cortex.
Since the early days of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), retinotopic mapping emerged as a powerful and widely-accepted tool, allowing the identification of individual visual cortical fields and furthering the study of visual processing. In contrast, tonotopic mapping in auditory cortex proved more challenging primarily because of the smaller size of auditory cortical fields. The sp...
متن کاملDual neural routing of visual facilitation in speech processing.
Viewing our interlocutor facilitates speech perception, unlike for instance when we telephone. Several neural routes and mechanisms could account for this phenomenon. Using magnetoencephalography, we show that when seeing the interlocutor, latencies of auditory responses (M100) are the shorter the more predictable speech is from visual input, whether the auditory signal was congruent or not. In...
